For home brewers who have to tackle the dreaded "M" word, MATH
In the US and Canada, volume is how both liquids and solids are expressed, such as cups of water, cups of milk, cups of flour or cups of dry herbs.
* Blank equivalents mean there is no practical reason for using the equivalent when
measuring or the equivalent is self explanatory (e.g., 3.785 liters = 3,785 milliliters).
** A one liter/1,000 milliliter baseline. Note that "American" measurements have no nice, even
fractions that compare. Because of this, it's easier to use milliliters
when converting recipes.
*** One teaspoon is 5 milliliters. Sometimes kitchen measuring
spoons are cheaply constructed and range from 3 to 5
milliliters. The difference
is not critical unless measuring very small amounts.
( ) Commonly acceptable "rounded off" ml measurements.
